What are EACs?

     The first municipal EAC in Ontario was established 34 years ago in Waterloo Region. A few years later, Halton Region, then Niagra Region set up committees. All three are still going strong. Since then, more than 30 Ontario municipalities have established such committees, working within regional municipalities, cities, towns, and townships and using a variety of names.

     The mandate of different EACs across the province varies. Some committees confine themselves to advising the municipal Council on environmental aspects of land-use planning, whereas some deal with other environmental issues of local interest and importance, including:
